About the Arakwal PeopleThe Arakwal people are the Traditional Custodians of the Byron Bay region. Their country -looked after by the Aboriginal Traditional owners- extends south of Broken Head to the north of Brunswick River, west to the escarpment of Byron Bay and east out to the Tasman Sea.
Byron Bay has been a very important meeting place for the Arakwal people as well as for the neighbouring clans and the people of the Bundjalung Nation. It has been very important to them, that even though they were under a lot of pressure and found it difficult when the English settlers came, they continued to live in the Byron Bay area. |
The Arakwal CorporationThe Bundjalung of Byron Bay Aboriginal Corporation (Arakwal) was established in 1996 and the members consist of Bundjalung people (Staff and executive of 2012 can be seen in image 6).
The focus of this organisation is to strengthen Aboriginal identity and culture and ensure the efforts accord with their cultural values, customs and practice. Through the government, community groups and businesses, the management of water and land of the Arakwal is being assisted and the community is benefiting through improved housing, health and wellbeing and work opportunities.
